Learn from an examiner
I mark Cambridge and OCR exam scripts, so I know where marks are won and where they are lost.
- 3,500+scripts marked since 2022
- 800+scripts marked every year
- 2exam boards: Cambridge and OCR
How exam marking works
- Examiners mark each script against an official mark scheme, point by point. A mark is given for each correct step or idea, not for an overall impression.
- Before marking real scripts, examiners are trained and standardised: they study the mark scheme, mark practice scripts and agree with senior examiners on how to apply it.
- While marking, the work is checked for consistency by senior examiners, so that every student is judged by the same standard.
- Details differ by board and year. I never share confidential exam material.
What I see in over 800 scripts every year
- Students answering a different question from the one asked.
- Command words ignored: "state", "explain" and "evaluate" each need a different kind of answer.
- Missing units, wrong significant figures or a final answer with no working, so method marks are lost.
- Answers that are correct but not clear enough to earn the mark.
- Long questions left unfinished because time ran out.
What you gain from lessons with an examiner
- You learn to read a question the way an examiner does and to spot what each mark is for.
- You write answers in the language of the mark scheme, so every correct point is easy to credit.
- You see why working matters, and how to earn method marks even when the final answer is wrong.
- Your practice is marked honestly, against the mark scheme, with a clear reason for every lost mark.
- You get a realistic picture of what each grade looks like, so there are fewer surprises on exam day.
How we use this in lessons
- 1I mark one of your past-paper answers exactly as an examiner would.
- 2We look at where each mark was gained or lost.
- 3We build a personal list of the mistakes that cost you most.
- 4You practise similar questions until those mistakes disappear.
- 5Mock tests are marked to the mark scheme and fed into your progress plan.
Being an examiner does not mean I know future exam questions, and I have no access to anyone's results or scripts. What I offer is a clear understanding of how marks are awarded, which I turn into practical skills for you. View my certificates
Questions
Does being an examiner mean you know the exam questions?
No. Examiners do not know future questions. What I know is how answers are marked, and I teach you to answer in the way that earns marks.
Which boards do you examine for?
Cambridge and OCR. The principles of mark-scheme marking are similar across boards, and in lessons I use the mark scheme of the board you are entered for.
Is this useful if I am not studying a Cambridge or OCR course?
Yes. Reading questions precisely, showing working and writing clear answers earn marks on any exam, including IB, Edexcel and entry tests.
Where can I see your examiner recognition?
On the certificates page.
